National Honor Society
The National Honor Society (NHS) was founded in 1921 as an organization that recognizes and encourages academic achievement while developing characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. The ideals of scholarship, character, service, and leadership remain relevant today. Through NHS service activities, members maintain and extend the qualities upon which the organization was founded. Membership is thus both an honor and a commitment.
As a member you will be required to serve 30 hours of community service which includes 15 hours of tutoring each academic year. You are also required to maintain coursework above a B- in each of your academic courses. The NHS also sponsers two blood drives each year and members are expected to volunteer and find blood donors. NHS members also serve as tutors for our community.
New members are identified in the Fall of each academic year. Students who have a 3.67 GPA or higher receive initial letters by October of their junior or senior years in school. Students then fill in an activity/volunteer sheet and his/her information is then presented to the Faculty Council. New inductees are invited by the end of October to join our chapter of the National Honor Society. A candlelight induction ceremony is conducted usually the first week of November.
